Women's soccer team off to best start in program history

READING, PA (September 22, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team is off to its best start in program history after defeating visiting SUNY Cobleskill, 9-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions have won five straight contests to reach 5-2 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC standings. The Fighting Tigers fall to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Each of the nine goals were scored by different players for the Nittany Lions. Chelsea Ray scored off a rebound to start the scoring frenzy at the 4:05 mark, after Meaghan Daly's shot ricoheted off the crossbar. Katie Warner recorded her first goal of the season with a chip shot over the keeper's head from about 40-yards out. Warner also tallied an assist on a goal by Sara Conover, who ranks among the top-10 in the nation in goals (9) and points (20).

After hitting the crossbar and having a few shots sail just high of the goal, Daly was able to find the back of the net for her third goal of the season. She also registered two assists.

Emma Babp, Steph Tankalavage, and Ashley Pardoski each recorded their first goals of the season. The other goals came from Caitlin Deibler and Karly Shaffert. Ellie McKinstry added the assist on Shaffert's goal midway through the first half.

Savannah Cramer and Sarah Elmontacir combined for a shutout, which was the third of the season. Cramer leads the NEAC with miniscule 0.93 goals against average. Neither keeper was tested with a shot due to the strong offensive attack and solid defensive play of Pardoski, Melissa Bennett, Emily Rumpf, and Warner.

During the Nittany Lions five match winning streak, they have outscored the opposition by a score of 28-2.

Berks will look to continue its hot start to the first half of the season at home tomorrow at 12 p.m. against SUNYIT.
