Nittany Lions split first day of Neumann Tournament



ASTON, PA (September 14, 2012) - After dropping a hard fought battle with Widener University, the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team salvaged a split on the first day of the Neumann Tournament with a dominating win over Bryn Mawr College on Friday night. The Nittany Lions (3-3) lost to Widener, 3-1, by game scores of 19-25, 20-25, 25-20, 17-25 in the opener before downing Bryn Mawr with a straight-set 3-0 win by scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-18.

Kayla Mosser turned in a strong performance in Berks' victory over the Owls. The sophomore recorded 10 kills, while committing only two errors and added four solo blocks. Maria Pavone chipped in seven kills and Caitlin Scroger added five. Rachel Sweeney picked up three of the Nittany Lions six service aces.

The Berks defensive unit collected 62 digs, led by sophomore libero Victoria Young's team-high 18. Courtney Lucarelli followed with 11, while Abby Musselman and Katie Sostak each had eight. The front line played a solid role in stopping the Bryn Mawr attack as Scroger and Heleanna Davison each added a solo block to go along with the four by Mosser. The Nittany Lions also registered four block assists.

Pavone turned in a career performance in the Nittany Lions opener against Widener. She recorded 14 kills, suprassing her previous high of 11 set last season against Alvernia University. The sophomore outside hitter also had four digs and block assists.

Scroger, Lucarelli, and Mosser each chipped in seven kills, while Sweeney added six.

Musselman, who finished the day with 68 assists, recorded 38 against the Pride (5-8). Young had a season-best 25 digs, followed by Sostak and Lucarelli with 14.

The Nittany Lions will face Marymount University at 12 p.m. and St. Mary's College (Md.) at 4 p.m. on the second day of the Neumann Tournament tomorrow afternoon.
