Ray's late goal sinks Lancaster Bible

READING, PA (September 11, 2012) - Chelsea Ray beat the keeper with a placed shot into the far corner to help the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over conference foe Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions, who fell to Lancaster Bible in the semifinal round last season, improve to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC. The Chargers are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

In the 72nd minute, Ray received a pass through traffic from Karly Shaffert to record the gamewinner. Ray's celebration was even sweeter after she missed out a chance for the go-ahead goal with a shot of the post at the 57:27 mark.

Shaffert tallied a goal for the second-straight contest, with a beautiful shot over the keepers head into the top right corner five minutes, two seconds into the contest. Sara Conover provided the assist to record her 10th point in three games to give Berks a 1-0 lead.

Savannah Cramer turned in another strong effort in net for Berks, recording eight saves and allowing only one goal. During the Nittany Lions three match win streak, Cramer has 18 saves and lowered her goals against average to 1.25 per game.

After outscoring the opposition 15-1 in NEAC matches, the Chargers were kept relatively silent by
the defensive unit of Ashley Pardoski, Melissa Bennett, Katie Warner, and Emily Rumpf. The tone was controlled by Ellie McKinstry, Caitlin Deibler, and Steph Tankalavage at midfield and on the offensive zone.

The Chargers evened the match with less than five minutes remaining in the first half Evelyn Stauffer found the back of the net off a great pass from Whitney Heise. Heise was also robbed of a goal when her would-be game tying shot from 20-yards out drilled the left post with 9:59 to play in the match.

Meaghan Daly also just missed out on a score when she beat the diving keeper with a shot, but it rolled just wide of the goal.

Lancaster Bible held a slim 9-6 margin in shots on goal and 4-3 on corners.

The Nittany Lions will return to action with an NEAC contest at Wilson College on Saturday, September 15 at 12:30 p.m.
