Scroger turns in phenomenal performance in her debut

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (August 31, 2012) - Caitlin Scroger finished with a contest-high 19 kills, but the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team was narrowly edged, 3-2, on the road against Elizabethtown College in Friday night's season opener. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions had only one match go the distance to five sets in 2011, when they fell by a score of 3-2 in the final contest of the season against Gallaudet University. On Friday evening, the teams traded wins in each set, with the Blue Jays winning by a score of 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 18-25, and 15-13.

The 19 kills Scroger recorded in her collegiate debut is the fourth highest in school-history. She finished the day with a .293 hitting percentage to lead the Nittany Lions offensive attack. The freshman middle blocker also recorded three block assists.

Maria Pavone chipped in eight kills, while Courtney Lucarelli and Kayla Mosser each added seven. Freshman setter Abby Musselman also made a brilliant debut for the Nittany Lions, finishing with 40 assists. Victoria Young led Berks with 21 digs, followed by Lucarelli (17) and Musselman (12).

Lindsay Palm led Elizabethtown with 12 kills, while Holly Bubb and Victoria Leidy each recorded 10. Carolyn Lukiewski had a match-high 29 digs and the Blue Jays collected 88 as a team.

The Nittany Lions will face Lancaster Bible College at 11 a.m. and host Franklin & Marshall College at 1 p.m.
