Nittany Lions drop heartbreaker to Albright

READING, PA (August 31, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team gave everything they had for all 90 minutes in a 4-3 setback to Albright College in the 2012 season opener on Friday afternoon. (Boxscore)

John Murphy played strong in his Nittany Lion debut, recording 12 saves and thrwarting several Albright attacks with his aggressive play. Murphy came out of net numerous occasions to kick away inserts or would make sliding tackles at the top of the box to knock the ball away.

Berks got on the board first when freshman midfielder Justin Bass drilled a line drive into the left corner of the net at the 18:45 mark of the first half. Tim Petrowsky provided the assist.

Albright responded five minutes later with a goal by Tyler Waters. Avis McGill put the Nittany Lions back up by one after sliding past the defender and knocking a loose ball past the keeper on the right side. The lead was short lived as Albright tallied two goals in the 65th minute to go ahead 3-2. Pat Seiler added Albright's final score in the 71st minute, Waters added the assist.

The Nittany Lions never quit and were able to pull within one as freshman Michael Vang deflected a ball through traffic and into the back of the net. Berks was held scoreless over the next 15 minutes, but had several scoring oppurtunies in that time.

Berks was in the game until the very end despite Albright having the advantage in shots (27-8) and corners (5-1).

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Saturday, September 8 when they open up conference play at Wells College.
