Nittany Lions sweep Penn State Abington on the road

ABINGTON, PA (April 6, 2012) - Devon Denker and Larissa Tenley each tossed complete-games to lead the Penn State Berks softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Penn State Abington in a NEAC South Division showdown on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions (5-17, 5-3 NEAC South) won 6-3 in the opener and 5-2 in the second game.

In game one, Denker picked up her first win of the season from the pitcher's circle after allowing just three earned runs. She scattered five hits and struck out two batters. She set down nine straight batters from the second inning through the start of the fifth.

Denker helped herself at the plate where she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Stefany Dusman collected two hits and scored two runs, while Marissa Ruggiero had two hits and two RBI. Dayna Harrison finished 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Sarah Nelson led off the third inning with a triple to right field and scored on an error by the shortstop to put Berks ahead 1-0.

The Nittany Lions led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Harrisburg made the game interesting after scoring three runs. Berks killed the rally by tacking in the sixth when Ruggiero doubled down the line to score Denker and Kaylie Vrabel.

Tenley allowed only four hits in her complete-game gem. She allowed two runs - one earned - and struck out four batters to improve her season record to 2-2.

Harrisburg scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut Berks' lead to 3-2. The Nittany Lions responded immediately in the top of the fifth when a double by Britany Nelson scored Ruggiero and Raychel Dearmitt.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 at Hintz Athletic Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
