Baseball advances to West Division title game

READING, PA (April 27, 2012) - The Penn State Berks baseball team came out banging on all cylinders early Friday morning and continued through the mid-afternoon in wins over SUNYIT and Gallaudet University on the first day of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) West Division Tournament at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions downed SUNYIT by a score of 9-4 in the opener and followed with a 7-2 win over the Bison to earn a spot in the conference championship game on Sunday.

Despite the chilly weather conditions and a 9 a.m. start time, Berks was wide awake and had a loose demeanor. Prior to the game, Logan Kurtz put on a dancing clinic to the song "We No Speak Americano" by Yolanda Be Cool that gave the Nittany Lions an added spark before even setting foot on the field.

Connor Corson had a career-day going 5-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Nick Vitelli, Kyle Hartman and Kevin Heilman each went 3-for-5. The Nittany Lions pounded out 19 hits in the winning effort.

Matt Emrick, who received his NEAC Pitcher of the Year award after the game, continued his dominating play on the mound with another complete game victory. The junior right-hander attacked the strike zone all day to force a slew of ground ball out. Emrick worked out of jams all day with the help of three double plays and one pick off.

Berks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning against the Wildcats and tacked on two more runs in the third and fourth innings. The three through six batters in the order each finished the game with two RBI.

The Nittany Lions played eight of their strongest innings of the season with perfectly executed hit-and-runs and manufacturing runs through small ball. The wheels fell off in the top of the ninth, but the 9-1 lead was too much for the Wildcats to overcome. Berks committed two errors that led three unearned runs.

Berks, who were swept by Gallaudet last Saturday for the only conference losses of the season, were able to win when it mattered most in the winner's bracket semifinal game. Rich Schlamowitz and Ryan Tantala each went 4-for-4 at the plate with a combined three runs scored and three RBI. Tantala broke a 1-all tie with a two-run triple to right field in the bottom of the fourth.

Heilman improved to 4-1 on the season, which ties Emrick for the team lead. He scattered five hits over 7.0 innings, allowed two runs – one earned – and struck out five batters. The crafty right-hander forced three double plays to escape most of the scoring threats by Gallaudet. Hartman recorded the final four outs of the game, all by strikeout.

The Nittany Lions will look to win their second conference championship in three years on Sunday at 10 a.m. They will await Saturday's consolation games. SUNYIT and Penn State Abington will play Saturday morning and the winner will face Gallaudet in the consolation bracket semifinals.
