Heeman and Tenley honored for Senior Day

READING, PA (April 21, 2012) - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division games to Wilson College, 5-4 and 8-1, in the home finale at Hintz Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon.

Before the games even began, the Nittany Lions had a couple of ceremonies going on. Ashley Heeman and Larissa Tenley were honored with a Senior Day celebration. The softball team also hosted its 2nd Annual Strikeout Cancer game. Louise Scarborough, a breast cancer survivor, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The Nittany Lions raised $113.70 in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. For more information on this foundation, please click here.

When the contests began, the Nittany Lions came up just short in a bid at ending Wilson's perfect conference record. The Phoenix (23-2, 18-0 NEAC South) got two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-all tie.

Marissa Ruggiero had a two-out double in the Nittany Lions final at-bats to pull Berks within one run, but she was stranded in scoring position. Stefany Dusman went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while Kaylie Vrabel scored a run and had a stolen base.

Tenley pitched the first four innings but did not factor into the decision. She let up only two hits and one earned run, while striking out five batters.

In the second game, Dayna Harrison went 2-for-3. Heeman, Dusman and Vrabel each recorded one hit for the Nittany Lions. Tenley pitched one-hit ball in three innings of scoreless relief. She also tallied two strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions will finish off the regular season with a NEAC doubleheader at the College of St. Elizabeth on Sunday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
