Softball splits NEAC doubleheader with Harrisburg

READING, PA (April 17, 2012) - Kaylie Vrabel had a career-day and Raychel Dearmitt tossed her third consecutive complete game to lead the Penn State Berks softball team to a 9-3 win in the opener against Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday afternoon. Harrisburg responded with a 10-2 victory in the second game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division showdown.

Berks sits at third place in the standings with a record of 10-6, which is one-game behind Harrisburg heading into the final weekend of the season. Wilson College, who Berks will face on Saturday, is in first-place with a conference record of 14-0.

Vrabel finished the day a perfect 6-for-6, all singles, with three runs scored, two RBI and four stolen bases. In the opening game victory, Vrabel did her most damage with four hits, two runs, two RBI and three stolen bases. Marissa Ruggiero also gave a strong effort in the win, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Dayna Harrison collected two hits, drove in two runs and recorded a stolen base.

Dearmitt earned her third win of the season after surrendering just three runs. She struck out three batters to raise her season total to 52, which leads the team. Dearmitt was tagged for 11 hits, but the freshman right-hander forced Harrisburg to leave eight runners on base.

With the game tied at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth, the Nittany Lions broke it open with a five-spot. In that scoring spree, they sent 10 batters to the plate, recording five hits and three walks.

In the second game, Berks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third behind the help of two singles and two Harrisburg errors. Harrisburg responded with two runs in the top of the fourth and then added eight in the fifth.

Vrabel (two hits), Devon Denker and Stefany Dusman recorded all of the hits for the Nittany Lions.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilson College on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. and travel to the College of St. Elizabeth in the regular-season finale on Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
