Softball picks up season sweep of Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 14, 2012) – The Penn State Berks softball team won by scores of 8-3 and 14-1 to finish off the season sweep over Gallaudet University in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division doubleheader.

The Nittany Lions improved to 9-19 overall and 9-3 in the conference to keep pace with Penn State Harrisburg for second place in the division. The Bison fell to 5-22 overall and 3-8 in the NEAC Southern Division.

In the opener, Raychel Dearmitt tossed her fifth complete-game of the season to earn her second win from the pitcher's circle. She recorded 13 of the 21 outs by strikeout, which established a season-high for the freshman right-hander. Dearmitt surrendered three runs – one earned – after scattering six hits and walking none.

Dearmitt was one of four Nittany Lions to finish with two hits in the opening game. Alyssa Stahly (2-for-4) recorded four RBIs and a double, while Marissa Ruggiero went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and a stolen base. Senior third baseman Ashley Heeman also finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

With a single in the top of the second inning of game two, Ruggiero became just the third player in program history to reach 100 career hits. She joins former teammates BRITTANY HICKS (123 hits) and Ashley Warner (104 hits) to reach the milestone.

Devon Denker continued the pitching dominance in the nightcap for the Nittany Lions with a three-hitter. She struck out two batters and allowed just one unearned run. Denker helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

Sophomore first baseman Sarah Nelson set season-high's with three hits, two RBI and a stolen base. She also scored two runs, which matched a season-high.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington Sunday, April 15 in an NEAC Southern Division doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
