Nittany Lions fall to Division II powerhouse Kutztown

READING, PA (April 12, 2012) - The Penn State Berks baseball team lost its non-conference contest, 9-1, with Division II No. 25 Kutztown University on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions received 3.0 innings from freshman right-hander Steve Koenig. He scattered four hits, while allowing three runs – two earned – and striking out one. Rich Schlamowitz matched a season-high three strikeouts in two innings of work. Bryer Eshbach limited the Golden Bears (23-9) to one run over 3.0 innings. Kyle Hartman had one strikeout and retired the side in order in the top of the ninth.

Hartman stayed red-hot at the plate, finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. He has hit safely in nine of the last 10 games and has batted .467 (14-for-30) in that time. During that stretch, Hartman has raised his batting average from .268 to a team-leading .338 average.

Michael Ference, Aaron Wilkins and Tyler Salvati each recorded a hit for the Nittany Lions. Ryan Tantala had the lone RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.

The Golden Bears were led on offense by Ricky Gorrell, who went 2-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Sean McCormick had two hits and an RBI, while T.J. Johnson finished 1-for-1 with an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Western Division doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 12 p.m.
