Nittany Lions swept by Swarthmore in non-conference tilt

READING, PA (April 10, 2012) - The Penn State Berks softball team lost to Swarthmore College, 9-2 and 8-4, in the last of its non-conference contests on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (7-18) saw their season-high four game winning streak snapped with the losses, while the Garnets (11-14) were able to end a six game slide.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions scored in the first inning without recording a hit. Devon Denker and Stefany Dusman each walked and moved up a base on a pased ball. Marissa Ruggiero then did her job by sending a flyball to centerfield to score Denker.

Denker broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single down the leftfield line in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ashley Heeman singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and pinch-runner Sarah Nelson came around to score on an RBI single by Dusman.

Raychel Dearmitt pitched 6.0 innings and recorded seven strikeouts for Berks. In 33.0 innings of work this season, Dearmitt has a team-high 36 strikeouts.

In the second game, Dusman blasted her second home run of the season in the first inning. She finished the contest 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alyssa Stahly, who leads the team with a .345 batting average, went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Dayna Harrison finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Denker and Ruggiero each had a hit and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will begin the second half of their conference schedule when they travel to Gallaudet University on Saturday, April 14. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
