Baseball drops Spring Break opener to Eastern

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 5, 2012) – Brent Rhoads turned in a solid performance on the mound, but the Penn State Berks baseball team fell, 4-2, to Eastern University at The Ripken Experience on Monday morning.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) were held to six hits, four of which went for doubles. Senior Michael Ference recorded both of the runs batted in for Berks. Connor Corson and Aaron Wilkins each went 2-for-4, while
Rich Schlamowitz and Ference had one hit each.

Rhoads scattered five hits over a career-high six innings of work. The only time the left-hander ran into trouble was in the fourth when the Eagles (3-2) put up two runs. Rhoads struck out two batters and did not issue any walks during his outing.

In the bottom of the fourth, Corson got the Nittany Lions started with a leadoff double and came around to score on an error by the third baseman to make it 2-1 in Eastern's favor.

Freshman Steve Koenig made his pitching debut with 3.0 effective innings. He allowed two runs – both unearned – in the top of the ninth. The right-hander surrendered four hits and did not walk any batters.

Trailing by three runs, Schlamowitz started a rally in the bottom half of the ninth with a leadoff double. Ference then cut the deficit to two runs by scoring Schlamowitz with a double. The Nittany Lions were able to load the bases with just one out, but the Eagles worked out of the jam to record the victory.

Berks will continue their Spring Break Trip with two games tomorrow morning. They will open with King's College at 9 a.m., followed by Averett University at noon.
