Nittany Lions pick up doubleheader sweep over St. Elizabeth

READING, PA (March 31, 2012) - The Penn State Berks softball team swept its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division doubleheader against the College of Saint Elizabeth by scores of 8-0 and 18-5 on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

In the two contests, the Nittany Lions (3-13, 3-1 NEAC South) collected 23 hits, 13 walks, five stolen bases and five extra base hits. The pitching staff combined for six strike outs and gave up just 10 total hits.

Devon Denker hit a sacrifice fly down the left field line to score Kelsey Halloran in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game due to the eight-run rule. Kaylie Vrabel was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in. Marissa Ruggiero, Alyssa Stahly and Ashley Heeman all went 2-for-3 with one runs scored and one RBI.

Larissa Tenley (1-1) tossed four innings of two-hit ball. She struck out a season high five batters and did not walk any batters. The only trouble Tenley ran into came in the second inning when the Screaming Eagles (3-13, 0-4 NEAC South) had runners on second and third with one out. Tenley forced a ground out to second and struck out the next batter to work out of the jam.

Denker pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions scored at least three runs in each of their at-bats. Stahly was 2-for-3 with a double and matched her career-high with five RBIs. Stefany Dusman went 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored. Dayna Harrison had a double and drove in three runs and pitcher Britany Nelson recorded two hits and three RBI.

Nelson earned her second win of the season after pitching all five innings. The sophomore right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed five runs. She recorded two strikeouts and did not issue any walks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for a conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
