Softball opens conference play with a split at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA (March 28, 2012) -
Britany Nelson pitched a complete-game shutout to salvage a split for the Penn State Berks softball team in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell 7-3 in the first game before picking up a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

Nelson scattered seven hits and recorded two strikeouts without issuing a walk to lead Berks to its first win of the season. Nelson allowed only two Penn State Harrisburg base runners to reach third base the entire game.

Nelson also put on a performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Kaylie Vrabel, who recorded her first multi-hit game of the season, went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Kate Harley was 1-for-3 at the dish with a run scored.

In the opener, the Berks offense came to life a little too late with three runs in the final frame. Vrabel had an RBI single with two outs in the seventh to break up Kara Boyd's no-hit bid. Marissa Ruggiero followed with an RBI single to score Ashley Heeman before Boyd got a ground out to end the game.

The Nittany Lions will continue NEAC Southern Division play when they host the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
