Lebanon Valley edges Nittany Lions

READING, PA (March 18, 2012) – Nick Vitelli and Christian Marcin each had a strong day at the plate, but the Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 6-3 road loss to Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the offense couldn't push any runs across. Berks finished the contest with eight runners left on base, seven of which were in scoring position.

Kyle Hartman put the Nittany Lions on the scoreboard in the third inning with an RBI single that scored Kevin Heilman. Heilman had a two-out single through the left side, advanced to second on a walk to Connor Corson and came in to score on Hartman's single to center.

Vitelli finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Marcin, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances, finished a career-best 3-for-3.

Marcin led off the fifth inning with a double to right center and Vitelli drove him in with a single to left, cutting the Dutchmen (7-6) lead to 5-2.

The duo tried to spark a rally in the top of the ninth with two outs. Marcin drew a walk and reached third on Vitelli's double down the left field line. But Ian Younker got a fly out to center field to record the save in his third inning of work.

Ryan Tantala scattered six hits over 6.0 innings of work. He allowed five runs – four earned – while striking out a season-high four batters. David Loose threw the final two innings, surrendering two hits and one run.

The Dutchmen were led by Jordan Witmer, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Phillip Dohner had two hits and scored two runs, while Jacob Rhody collected an RBI.

The Nittany Lions, who outhit Lebanon Valley by a 10-8 margin, fell to 0-10 for the season. They have lost by three runs or less in seven of those contests.

Berks will travel to Gettysburg College for a non-conference contest on Friday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
