Baseball drops season opener at Albright

READING, Pa (February 28, 2012) – The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the 2012 season with a tough 8-6 setback against Albright College on a sunny, mild Tuesday afternoon at Kelchner Field.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) started out strong, but were unable to hold off Albright's late rally. The Lions (2-3) scored six runs in their final three at-bats to earn the win.

Berks collected 13 hits and had five players finish with two or more hits. Leadoff man Aaron Wilkins started off his junior campaign 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, while senior third baseman Michael Ference was 3-for-5 with a double. Kyle Hartman, Dillon Landrigan and Steve Koenig each collected two hits.

Wilkins singled and advanced to second on an error to open up the game. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as Hartman recorded the first of his two RBI.

Wilkins got things going in the third inning as Berks tacked on two more runs. He drew a walk, stole second and went to third on a groundout by Matt Emrick.  Hartman grounded out to first to knock Wilkins in and put Berks up 2-0. One batter later, Connor Corson came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop.

In the top of the fourth, Koenig led off the inning with an infield single and Wilkins followed with a walk. With two outs, Corson lined a single to left to drive in Koenig and Wilkins, putting Berks up 5-0.

Senior right-hander Rich Schlamowitz started the game with three solid innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. With runners on second and third and two outs, Schlamowitz forced a groundout to Hartman to end a scoring threat in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Dusten Rutt made his collegiate debut with two innings pitched. In his first inning of work, the left-hander gave up two runs, but settled in nicely by facing the minimum amount of batters in the fifth. Rutt started the inning with a pair of pop outs before allowing a single. Landrigan immediately gunned down the runner trying to steal second base to end the inning.

After Albright evened the game at 6-all in the bottom of the seventh, David Loose entered the game with a base loaded jam. The sophomore righty worked his way out of it by inducing an inning-ending double play.

Max Dundore broke the tie with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give Albright its first lead of the game. He finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jared Ruppert was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Jon Raymond went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Jared Neiheiser worked the final three innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits, while striking out five batters.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this weekend for their annual Spring Break Trip. They will play six games in four days, beginning with Eastern University on Monday, March 5 at 9 a.m.
