Men's basketball win season-high fourth straight

READING, PA (February 15, 2012) - Six players finished in double figures as the Penn State Berks men's basketball team knocked off first place Penn State Harrisburg, 88-83, in a crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Beaver Community Center on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions stayed in the hunt for a spot in the postseason, moving to 8-13 overall and 7-5 in the NEAC South with the win. Harrisburg, who has clinched first-place in the south division and will be the second overall seed in the playoffs, fell to 18-6 overall and 11-2 in the NEAC.

When the two teams met last on December 3, Harrisburg pulled out an 81-79 victory with a game-winning shot in the final seconds. Tonight's contest was no different with fans on the edge of their seats until the clock read 00:00.

Shawn Green and Connor Hough each recorded the second double-doubles of their careers, while combining for 37 points on 15-of-22 shooting to lead the Nittany Lions. As a team, Berks scorched the net by going 55.2% (32-of-58) from the floor and converting on 20 of their 32 trips at the foul line.

Green had the finest shooting performance of his career, going 8-of-11 from the field to finish with a team-best 22 points. The sophomore guard created a bunch of scoring opportunities with strong drives to the basket. Hough had 15 points and was very efficient with his shots by converting 7-of-12 attempts, primarily in the paint. The duo each grabbed 11 rebounds, which was a personal-best for Green and matched a career-high for Hough.

For the second time in three games, Jeff Schmidt finished just two assists shy of a triple-double. The junior enforcer had 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. He made 8-of-10 at the foul line, including a pair with 15 seconds left to ice the game.

Tom Smith chipped in 12 points, six boards and two blocked shots, while Dontez Reid had 11 points and three assists. Freshman Michael Porter came up huge while making the first start of his young career. The freshman, who knocked down two clutch 3-pointers to swing momentum in Berks' favor, finished with 10 points.

David Reisinger had a contest-high 27 points, while Steve Jones had 26 points and surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career. The pair, however, was very inconsistent throughout the contest. Reisinger had 22 points with 8:26 left in the first half and would only net five more points the rest of the way. Jones was held scoreless through the first 22 minutes and 20 seconds of the game.

The Nittany Lions will travel for a NEAC contest with Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and host Gallaudet University in the regular-season finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
