Men's basketball wins thriller over Gallaudet

READING, PA (December 7, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to earn a 75-72 victory against Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday night at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (1-7, 1-0 NEAC) trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half and were down 62-52 with 8:42 to play. Berks used a 21-10 run, capped off by a Dontez Reid 3-pointer, to gain a one-point advantage with 54 seconds, its first lead since 2:43 left in the first half.

The Bison (3-5, 0-1 NEAC South) turned the ball over the next time down the floor and Dameon Nixon hit one of his two free throws to build a two-point lead with 14 seconds left. Jeff Schmidt intercepted a pass and was immediately fouled with three seconds remaining. Schmidt made his first foul shot and missed the second.

Orion Palmer grabbed the rebound and tossed a quick pass to Seeber, who was about 10 behind half court. As time expired, Seeber's heave toward the basket looked like it may go it, but it clanked off the back iron.

Reid led the Nittany Lions and recorded a season-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. The senior guard drained five 3-pointers, which is one of his career-high. Reid was instrumental in the second half comeback run, notching 12 points and three assists.

Nixon finished with 14 points, four steals, and three assists. Tom Smith chipped in 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed six boards. Jim Wagner made the most out of his career-high 25 minutes of playing time. The sophomore guard was on the court for the Nittany Lions during crunch-time and matched his personal-best in points with 11 points. He established a career-high in 3-pointers made (3) and rebounds (5).

Schmidt made a number of clutch plays down the stretch for Berks and came up just shy of recording a triple-double. He recorded nine points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He tied a career-high with four steals and his assist total also matched a personal-best.

The Nittany Lions scorched the nets from 3-point land to the tune of 54.5% (12-for-22) and were a very efficient 50.9% from the field. Berks, as has been the case all season, struggled at the free throw line as they made just 7-of-15 attempts.

Seeber shot 8-for-16 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and finished with a contest-high 20 points. Danny Kelly and Jocus Houston each added 16 points. Palmer chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Harrisburg in a NEAC South Division contest on Saturday, December 8 at 3 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
