Nittany Lions rally comes up short against Harrisburg

READING, PA (December 8, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered an 84-78 setback to visiting Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions trailed by three points at halftime and found themselves in a 16 point deficit with 7:58 remaining. Berks tightened up the match with an 11-0 run over a five minute stretch. Harrisburg shot 11-for-12 at the free throw line in the final two minutes to hold onto its lead.

Tom Smith matched a career-high for points scored with 23, followed by Dameon Nixon's personal-best 22. Smith, who finished 9-for-12 shooting from the floor, recorded 12 of his points in the first eight minutes of the contest. Nixon shot lights out as well, going 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Jeff Schmidt, who finished with 11 points, used a heads-up play to tie the contest early in the second period. Inbounding the ball beneath his own basket, Schmidt bounced the ball off of the defenders back, picked up the live ball and laid it off the glass for two points and drew a foul. Schmidt completed the old-fashioned 3-point play and tied the contest at 47-all.

Schmidt also finished with a contest-high six assists and registered two blocked shots.

Dontez Reid chipped in nine points and Mike Porter added eight. The duo combined on three of the Nittany Lions nine 3-pointers. Berks has racked up 21 3-pointers over the last two games and 59 for the season.

Harrisburg had four players finish in double-figures. Alberto De Los Santos led the offensive attack with 19 points, followed by Jordan Gatchell with 18. Joseph Farthing and Arick Sodini each chipped in 11 points. Farthing recorded nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Berks will host Penn State Hazleton in a non-conference game on Thursday, December 13 at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center. It will be the Nittany Lions last contest of the fall semester.
