Nittany Lions fall in nail biter to Immaculata

READING, PA (November 29, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped a hard fought battle to Immaculata University, 76-72, in Thursday nights non-conference contest at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions, who trailed 34-28 at halftime, rallied back to tie the contest at 56-56 off of a layup by Darren Major with 8:58 remaining. But the Mighty Macs used strong shooting at the foul line down the stretch to earn the win.

Immaculata converted on 28 of its 40 trips to the charity stripe and Nelson Torres went 5-for-6 at the line in the final 45 seconds. Berks struggled with its free throws with a 20-for-37 effort.

Major continued his strong play off the bench, finishing with a team-high 20 points. The freshman guard registered 15 points in the second half en route to recording a season-high.

Tom Smith shot 6-of-8 from the floor and finished with a season-high 16 points. With the Nittany Lions trailing by six late in the second half, Smith made an acrobatic jump shot as he was fouled to the ground. He knocked down the free throw to complete the old-fashion three- point play. Smith also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.

Mike Porter chipped in nine points and two assists, while Dameon Nixon and Connor Hough each added six points.

Torres led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Brandon Smith with 21. Smith recorded a double-double with his contest-high 11 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will face Delaware Valley College in a road game on Monday, December 3 at 7 p.m.
