Men’s basketball falls to Gwynedd-Mercy



READING, PA (November 20, 2012) – Gwynedd-Mercy College used a late second half run to defeat Penn State Berks by a score of 93-77 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening at Beaver Community Center. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (0-3) trailed by as much as 15 points in the first half, but cut that deficit down to 46-42 going into the intermission. Berks was able to whittle the Griffins (1-2) lead to one point early in the second half, but could not find the go-ahead basket.

Freshman guard Darren Major came off the bench for a team-high 19 points. He shot 5-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line.

Mike Porter knocked down three 3-pointers and finished the contest with 12 points. Senior Jeff Schmidt turned in a strong all-around performance as he finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, three blocked shots, and three steals. Connor Hough rounded out the Nittany Lion scorers in double figures with a 10 point effort.

The Lions were led on offense by Frank Champion (20 points), Darnell Artis (19 points), and Brendan Stanton (18 points). Brian Hennessey chipped in 13 points off the bench.

The Nittany Lions were hampered by poor shooting at the free throw line (16-for-28) and lost the battle of the boards by a 42-27 margin.

Berks will travel to Albright College for a non-conference tilt on Saturday, November 24 at 3 p.m.
