Nittany Lions fall to Rutgers-Camden in season opener

CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 16, 2012) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a 63-59 setback in the 2012-13 season opener to tournament host Rutgers-Camden on Friday evening. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions led 33-23 at halftime and were ahead by 11 points with 8:05 remaining in the contest. But the Scarlet Raptors chipped away at the deficit and eventually gained the lead (56:55) with 2:01 remaining. It was the first lead time Rutgers-Camden was on top since 13:01 mark of the first half.

Darren Major came off the bench and made a strong collegiate debut for the Nittany Lions. The freshman guard had a contest-high 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Major knocked down two 3s in the first half and went into the intermission with nine points.

Connor Hough recorded the third double-double of his career after chipping in 10 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward tallied nine of his boards on the defensive end of the court. Jeff Schmidt rounded out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures as he registered 11 points of 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. Schmidt also pulled in seven rebounds and blocked one shot.

The Scarlet Raptors were led by Teon Russell's 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Brandyn Wims added 13 points and Germir Pitts chipped in 10.

The teams played a fairly even contest, but the difference came at the foul line. Rutgers-Camden was able to convert on 14 of its 23 trips to the line, while the Nittany Lions went 7-of-9 at the charity stripe.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn State Brandywine at 1 p.m. in the consolation round of the tip-off tournament. Brandywine was defeated by Westfield State University, 69-64, earlier in the night on Friday.
