Nittany Lions play to 1-all draw with Abington

READING, PA (October 13, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team missed some late scoring opportunities and had to settle for a 1-1 tie with visiting Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (11-2-1, 9-0-1 NEAC) were unable to add to their program-best 11 game win streak, but they remain unbeaten dating back to September 5. Berks maintained its lead atop the NEAC with 28 points in the standings, followed by Lancaster Bible College (27 points), Penn State Abington (22 points), and Penn State Harrisburg (21 points).

In the 31st minute, Steph Tankalavage gave the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the season. Meaghan Daly recorded the assist after Tankalavage worked around a group of defenders and beat the keeper with a grounder into the back left corner.

With time winding down, Abington was able to break the Berks defense with the tying score of the foot of Alyssa Kaye. Kaye maneuvered past a few defenders and chipped a shot over the outstretched arms of Savannah Cramer with just 1:39 remaining in regulation. The goal was just the eighth of the season scored against Berks and first in conference play since September 11 against Lancaster Bible College.

Caitlin Deibler, who was playing at a high level all day, turned up her intensity in the overtime periods. She opened up the first overtime with a shot on goal in the 92nd minute, but Gabrielle Benedict was there to make the save. Also in the first overtime, Chelsea Ray had a shot miss just inches wide of the goal.

Berks controlled the ball throughout the majority of the contest and held a 23-2 advantage for shots and held a 5-2 margin on corners.

The Nittany Lions will return to action at home against Gallaudet University on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m in a Pink Game. The women's soccer team will accept donations to help fight and raise awareness about breast cancer.
