Stone scores season-high to lead Nittany Lions to victory

READING, PA (January 28, 2012) - Shakiyla Stone dropped a season-high 22 points and the Penn State Berks women's basketball team held off a late rally to earn a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) 79-73 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

Lancaster Bible won the tip-off and gained its only lead of the game on a layup by Sarah Heilenman. The Nittany Lions took a 4-2 lead early in the first half and built their largest cushion at 19 points with 13:01 remaining in the game. The Chargers chipped away at the lead and pulled to within three points with 4:03 remaining. After exchanging a couple of baskets, the Nittany Lions pulled away down the stretch by going 9-for-10 at the free throw line.

The Nittany Lions (5-12, 4-7 NEAC South) kept their playoff hopes alive with seven games remaining on the schedule. The Chargers (8-9 overall, 7-5 NEAC South) currently hold third and final playoff spot. Penn State Harrisburg (8-1) and the College of Saint Elizabeth (7-3) are first and second, respectively.

Stone's 22 points were the second most of her career, trailing her 26 point effort on February 05, 2011 against Cazenovia College. The senior guard set a personal-best with six 3-pointers, which is the second most for a single-game in program history. Stone did the bulk of her damage in the second half, where she shot 5-of-6, all from beyond the arc.

The Nittany Lions enjoyed their finest offensive performance of the season with 48.2% shooting from the floor (27-of-56). With the help of Stone's hot shooting from long distance, Berks set a season-high for 3's made (8) and 3-point shooting (53.3%). The accurate shooting led to the Nittany Lions easily surpassing their previous season-high for points (67) set in a win over Wells College.

Ashley Kenny finished with 16 points, one shy of her career-high. She also had a team-best 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Kaley Kinek was 6-of-8 at the charity stripe and recorded a season-high 13 points. Keisha Robinson rounded out the players in double-figures with 12 points. Kaelin Reed chipped in nine points and three blocks. She has at least one blocked shot in 12 of 17 contests, including each of the last six.

Brooklyn Wilson led the comeback bid for the Chargers, scoring all of her team-leading 22 points in the second half. She tallied 18 of those points in the final eight minutes. Lauren Heliger, who ranks among the leading scorers in the NEAC, finished with 21 points, while Heilenman added 13 points and 12 boards.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for a NEAC Southern Division contest on Sunday, January 29 at 1 p.m.
