Women's basketball drop nail biter to Morrisville State



READING, PA (January 21, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team stayed within striking distance all game, but Morrisville State was able to hold on for a 57-51 win on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Mustangs (5-10, 4-4 NEAC North) used a 15-0 run to go ahead 21-15 late in the first half. They went up by nine points with 2:32 left in the half, which was the biggest lead of the contest. Berks caught a break when Kaley Kinek was fouled attempting a half court shot with 0.2 on clock. She converted 2-of-3 at the line to cut the Mustangs lead to four points going into the intermission.

In the second half, Morrisville State built an eight point cushion with 14:34 to play. But less than two minutes later, the resilient Nittany Lions (3-11, 2-6 NEAC South) cut the deficit to two points. Berks trailed by four points or less over the final 10 minutes, until the Mustangs hit a pair of free throws to go up by six in the waning seconds of the game.

Kaelin Reed and Keisha Robinson led the Nittany Lions with 12 points each. Robinson also recorded seven steals, five rebounds and five assists. Ashley Kenny chipped in 11 points, seven of which came from the foul line. Kinek had a team-high eight rebounds.

Nijah Townsend recorded a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Nijee Scott chipped 15 points, five boards and four assists.

The Nittany Lions will host Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 22 at 3 p.m.
