READING, PA (September 27, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team dropped a hard fought defensive battle, 1-0, to Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
The Nittany Lions three match win streak came to an end and their overall record fell to 4-4-1. The Diplomats improved to 3-2-1 this season.
Savannah Cramer and the Berks defensive unit kept their strong play going. In the last four contests, the Nittany Lions have outscored the opposition by a 13-3 margin. Cramer finished the contest with eight saves and has lowered her goals against average to 1.63 in her freshman season.
The only blemish came in the 22nd minute Carly Nicholson snuck a shot through traffic and into the right side of the net. The grounder was just out of the reach of a diving Cramer, who was shielded from a pile of players in front of the cage.
Alexa Shumate had a pair of scoring opportunities, but Amanda McGowan had them played perfectly. Shumate tried to chip from 15-yards out, but McGowan leaped up and snagged it out of the air to keep the lead.
The Nittany Lions best scoring chance came of a corner kick at the 81:14 mark of contest. KATIE WARNER inserted a perfect pass that SAM RAIMONDO headed over the keeper. Â Diplomas defender Lynn Greenberg had it played perfectly and head it out of the box.
Franklin & Marshall held the advantage in both shots (12-6) and corner kicks (7-4), but the two teams played an evenly throughout.
The Nittany Lions will return to action on the road Saturday, October 1 against St. Elizabeth at 1 p.m.
