Shumate powers Lions to win over St. Elizabeth

SOMERSET, N.J. (October 1, 2011) – Alexa Shumate scored early in the first half and the Penn State Berks women's soccer team played shut down defense to pick up a 1-0 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

The Nittany Lions improved to 5-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Berks bounced back from a tough 1-0 setback to Franklin & Marshall snapped a three-match winning streak.

Shumate's goal, which was her first of the season, came in the 16th minute. Shumate was at the top of the box on the left side and fired a shot over the keeper's head to break the scoreless tie.

Goalkeeper Savannah Cramer was untested as the Berks defense kept the Screaming Eagles (2-10, 2-5 NEAC) silent. The Nittany Lions had seven shots on goal, while the three by St. Elizabeth never found its way to Cramer.

The defensive group of Melissa Bennett, Sam Raimondo, Karly Shaffert,
Chelsea Ray and Ashley Pardoski has contributed strongly all season and today was no exception. Cramer and the defensive unit have held opponents to just a 1.47 goals against average.

The Nittany Lions will host Cedar Crest College on Tuesday, October 4 at 4 p.m.
