Woods late goal propels Lions to first win

HAMBURG, PA (September 11, 2011) – Natalie Woods scored with just under six minutes remaining in the match to lead the Penn State  Berks women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the NEAC. With the loss, the Express fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Woods, who scored her first career goal last night in a draw with Keuka, fired a shot past the diving Express keeper and the Nittany Lion players erupted into celebration. Madi Litwin recorded the assist with a perfectly placed chip over the defense that reached Woods in stride.

The Nittany Lions spent most of the contest on the offensive end, outshooting Wells 19-6. Until Woods game winner, however, Berks could not find enough of a break in the defense. ALEXA SHUMATE and CHELSEA RAY combined for seven shots on goal.

Goalkeeper SAVANNAH CRAMER made five saves and recorded her first career shutout. She played brilliantly between the pipes and was assisted by the strong defensive play from Litwin, ASHLEY PARDOSKI, SAM RAIMONDO and MELISSA BENNETT.

Wells keeper Rachel Mattraw made 11 saves, including seven in the second half. Kasia Jandura-Cessna and Paige Stone each had two shots on goal, but Cramer stopped them all.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible on Tuesday, September 13 for a NEAC contest. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
