CLARKS SUMMIT, PA (May 1, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's tennis team finished up the 2010-11 season by placing six players on the All-Conference teams on Sunday afternoon's individual tournament at Birchwood Tennis Center.
The Nittany Lions, who finished runner-up in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) team tournament yesterday, had three players finish as champions. The team of Liz Martinez and Rebecca Loewenstein-Harting in the No. 3 doubles tournament, while Arion Harris claimed the title in No. 5 singles.
Martinez and Loewenstein-Harting lived up to their billing as the No. 1 seed in their tournament. The duo won by set scores of 9-7 in each of their matches. Martinez also finished in fourth place in the No. 4 singles tournament.
Harris, also the top seed, won her first match over Kelly Pietruch of Wells College by set scores of 6-3, 6-0. She then was a 6-4 winner in the first set against second seed Sarah Schneider of Keuka. Schneider then handed Harris her singles set loss all season, by a score 6-2. Harris bounced back with a convincing 6-3 triumph to claim the title.
Aimee Hoffman and Samantha Warga earned a spot on the All-NEAC Second Team after they fell in the No. 2 doubles championship match 8-4 to the top seed team from Penn State Abington. Hoffman and Warga defeated second seed Keuka 8-6 in the opening round.
Hoffman also finished runner-up in her No. 2 singles tournament. She won 6-3, 6-2 versus Caitlyn Copfer of Wells College. Hoffman then fell 6-1, 6-0 to Tessa Doyle of Wilson in the championship match.
The No. 1 doubles team of Crystal Hitz and Amanda Fuller were All-NEAC Third Team selections. The pair lost in their opener 8-5, but rebounded with an 8-5 win in the consolation finals. Hitz also had a third place finish in her No. 1 singles tournament. She lost 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round and then won 6-2, 6-4 to claim third place.
