Baseball splits twin bill with SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. (April 9, 2011) – The Penn State Berks baseball team split its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on the road to SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon. Berks cruised to a 12-0 win in the opener before falling 4-3 in eight innings in the second game.

The Nittany Lions (11-12, 4-1 NEAC) took advantage of six Cobleskill errors and exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning. They tacked on another four in the top of the fourth inning to build a very safe cushion.

The run support, paired along with Kevin Heilman's finest outing of the season helped the Lions easily grab a win in the opener. Heilman pitched six innings of two-hit ball and did not allow a runner reach second base to earn his first win. After giving up a single to start the game, Heilman force a 4-6-3 double play. He didn't allow another hit until the fifth inning, which was then followed by another 4-6-3 double play. The only other runner came in the fourth inning on a base on balls.

Bryer Eshbach pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to wrap up the pitching domination.

A sacrifice fly by Connor Corson was the only scoring between either team heading into the top of the sixth. The Fighting Tigers (4-10, 2-4 NEAC) then committed three errors to help the Lions to a seven run inning.

Nick Vitelli walked and then came around to score on a Michael Werner triple. After back-to-back walks, Dillon Landrigan knocked in two more runs with a single. Then the wheels fell off and a three of the next four runs came in on errors. Corson added another run with his second sacrifice fly of the game.

Tyler Page and Anthony Furillo each recorded an RBI in the four-run seventh inning.

Aaron Wilkins had two hits and scored two runs, while Werner added a double to go along with his triple in the sixth inning.

Wilkins and Greg Falk found themselves in a pitcher's duel in the second game. Wilkins pitched a season-high 7.1 innings and struck out nine batters. He surrendered eight hits and four runs – three earned. Falk struck out six batters in eight innings of work. He gave up three runs – two earned – on seven hits.

The Tigers capitalized in their half inning after the Lions left the go-ahead runner stranded at third in the top of the eighth. Tim Pyszcyznski singled and advanced to second on a sac bunt. The Tigers then got a walk and back-to-back singles to pick up their first NEAC win of the season.

Cobleskill took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second before each team traded a run in the third. The Lions took a brief lead with two in the fourth behind a leadoff triple by Corson. Vitelli had an RBI single and Geraldo Garcia grounded out to score Kyle Hartman. The Tigers evened things up in the bottom of the fourth with the help of Berks error.

The Nittany Lions will continue their road trip to New York with a NEAC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at SUNYIT. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
