Lions split pitcher’s duel doubleheader with SUNYIT

ROME, N.Y. (April 10, 2011) – The Penn State Berks and SUNYIT pitchers combined for 14 innings of dominant baseball in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader  at Larry DeLutis Field in Rome, N.Y.

The Wildcats (14-11, 5-2 NEAC) prevailed 4-3 in the opener, but Berks salvaged a split with a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap. The teams combined for just 14 hits and 23 strikeouts over the course of the two games.

Zach Guiles turned in a complete game one-hit, 10 strikeout gem in the Nittany Lions (12-13, 5-2 NEAC) game two victory. Guiles, who allowed an unearned run, saw his ERA drop to a season-best 2.51 and his record improve to 4-0. It was the freshman right-handers third complete game of the season and second in which he allowed only one hit.

SUNYIT's Michael Rose was nearly as impressive as Guiles. He surrendered only two hits and registered seven punch outs. Rose was the victim of several miscues, which the Lions took advantage of to gain their two runs.

In the third inning, Jerel Elliot doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third with two outs on a groundout by Kevin Heilman. Elliot then scored on a passed ball to give Berks a 1-0 advantage.

With the game evened at 1-all, Michael Werner reached first on a dropped third strike to start the inning. Heilman advanced him to second on a bunt single and each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Rich Schlamowitz. Dillon Landrigan then provided the go-ahead run with a sac fly to left field.

The Wildcats countered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the third. Lance Bull was hit by pitch and reached second after a Berks error. A single and then a groundout to short brought Bull in to score. Guiles retired 11 of the next 12 batters, but the Wildcats drew a walk to start the bottom of the seventh. Guiles composed himself and got a two pop outs to the catcher in foul grounds and a strikeout to secure the win.

In the 4-3 opening game setback, Berks mustered just four hits and the Wildcats were held to only five. Kyle Hartman went 2 for 4 with his first homerun of the season, while Ryan Tantala and Connor Corson each had one hit for the Lions. Jade Hendrick suffered the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – in 4.1 innings. Schlamowitz threw the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit and keeping the Wildcats off the board.

All four of the runs came in the bottom of the fifth behind four singles, two walks, a hit batsman and one passed ball. The damage could have been worse, but Schlamowitz was able to strand three runners with an inning ending strikeout.

Hartman's homer in the top of the second put the Lions up 1-0 in the early going and tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Corson and Hartman each had singled and came around to score on an error by the right fielder.

Berks will travel to Penn State Abington on Wednesday, April 13 for an NEAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
