Despite being swept, baseball clinches postseason berth

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2011) - The Penn State Berks baseball team clinched a berth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship, despite being swept by Gallaudet on Monday afternoon. Gallaudet won by scores of 9-8 and 6-5.

The Nittany Lions (15-18, 8-6 NEAC West) were assured a spot in the conference tournament this weekend after SUNYIT defeated Cazenovia. With the sweep, the Bison (17-21, 8-6 NEAC West) gained the No. 3 seed, pushing Berks to the fourth spot. The Nittany Lions will open up the tournament against top seed and host SUNY IT on Friday afternoon.

In Monday's action, the Bison took two different approaches to earn the sweep. In the opener, they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on to win on a hit by pitch with bases loaded. In the nightcap, they used a five-run sixth inning to cap a come-from-behind win.

Aaron Wilkins was 3 for 4 with a three runs batted in and finished a homer shy of the cycle. Dillon Landrigan added two hits and two RBI.

In the second game, Michael Werner was 2 for 4 with four RBI, while Will Geosits went 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Wilkins pitched two innings of two-hit ball in the second game, allowing only one run. Kyle Hartman and Kevin Heilman combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

The Lions will play their regular season finale with a non-conference game at Ursinus College tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
