Late heroics lead to sweep over Harrisburg

READING, PA (April 20, 2011) - Nick Vitelli had a walk off sacrifice fly to complete a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in the opening game and Michael Ference's three-run home run in the fifth propelled the Penn State Berks baseball team to a 6-2 win and a sweep over visiting Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Berks improved its overall record to 15-16 and are now 8-4 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Western Division. They are now even with SUNYIT in the win column, but have two more losses to sit one back for second place. Harrisburg dropped to 7-25 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

The Berks bats were tamed through the first six innings by pitcher Chris Sabol in the first game, but pinch hitter Michael Werner singled to get things going for the Nittany Lions in their final at-bats. Jeff BellAaron Wilkins went to the plate looking to move the runners up with a sacrifice. But Wilkins perfectly placed bunt led to a single to load the bases with no outs.

Geraldo Garcia followed with a double down the right field line to score two runs and even the game at 4-all. Vitelli then lifted a long enough fly to right field scoring Wilkins and finishing off the three run seventh inning rally.

Vitelli nearly single handedly put the Nittany Lions on the board in the second inning. After singling on a roller to shortstop, Vitelli stole second and advanced to third when the catchers throw wound up in center field. Connor Corson singled in Vitelli with a ground ball through the right side that spun in several different directions to avoid the first baseman.

Ryan Tantala earned his second win of the season after allowing just two runs – one earned – in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He entered the game in the third with bases loaded and one out, but escaped without allowing a runner to cross the plate. Tantala forced a swinging bunt a foot in front of home plate that Dillon Landrigan scooped up while standing on home and threw to first to finish the double play.

Prior to the start of the first game Anthony Furillo was honored for Senior Day. Furillo, a four-year member of the program, ranks in the top five-all time in nearly all offensive categories. He went 1 for 3 in the nightcap.

In the second game, Ference his three run bomb to add the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth for his first home run of the season.  With two outs and no one on base, Corson and Rich Schlamowitz

Harrisburg scored a run in the top of the first, but Berks countered with two in their half. The rally started with a two out walk by Kyle Hartman and a single by Vitelli. Corson then unloaded a double to right center to score Hartman and Vitelli.

Kevin Heilman (2-4) earned the win on the mound after six solid innings of work. He scattered five hits, registered four strikeouts and just one of the two runs scored against him were earned. Heilman worked out of jams throughout the game and enjoyed his first 1-2-3 inning in the sixth after Ference put the Lions ahead.

Jason Mays pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout to secure the sweep.

The Nittany Lions will finish their NEAC regular season with a doubleheader at Gallaudet University on Saturday, April 23 at noon.
