READING, PA (April 14) – The Penn State Berks baseball team was unable to cash in on its scoring opportunities in a 5-0 loss to Stevenson University in a non-conference contest at Hintz Athletic Field.
The Nittany Lions (12-15) left nine runners on base, seven of which were in scoring position. The Mustangs (12-22) left seven runners on base, but recorded three of their five runs with two outs.
Kyle Hartman recorded two of the Nittany Lions four hits to raise his team leading batting average to .370 (17 for 46). The freshman first baseman singled to lead off the fourth and two batters later Connor Corson walked. The pair moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with one out, but were stranded after a strikeout and groundout to first base.
Jerel Elliot (1 for 3) and Will Geosits (1 for 1) chipped in the other hits for Berks. Michael Ference reached on an error with two outs and stole second base in the seventh.
Ryan Tantala pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. He struck out one batter and allowed only one to reach base on an error. Jason Mays and David Loose each through a scoreless inning. Bryer Eshbach allowed an unearned run over two innings of work.
Stevenson had five different players knock in a run. Matt Bratter scored two runs and Justin Anderson picked up two hits. D.J. Milliken pitched six innings of two-hit ball to earn the win.
The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hintz Athletic Field.
