Baseball splits with Swarthmore on final day at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8, 2011) – The Penn State Berks baseball team finished off its spring break trip with a doubleheader split against Swarthmore College on Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions suffered a 3-2 extra inning setback in the opener before winning the second game by a score of 5-3.

The Nittany Lions (3-7) sent Kevin Heilman to the mound in the first game. The junior right hander went a 7 1/3 innings and worked around nine hits to surrender just three runs. Heilman struck out four batters, but the Garnet (3-1) were able to get the decisive run in the top of the eighth for the win

Berks evened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Vitelli, who finished 2-for-4, singled and came around to score on a single by Ryan Zawaski. Geraldo Garcia perfectly executed a safety squeeze to plate the second run.

The Nittany Lions nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Will Geosits. With two outs Garcia took off and tried to score from second base, but the Swarthmore right fielder came up firing to keep the game knotted at two.

Aaron Wilkins was 4-for-4 and Garcia finished with a pair of singles. Ryan Tantala recorded one strike out and got the final two outs in the eighth.

The Nittany Lions received a complete game pitching effort from Zach Guiles in their game two triumph. The freshman right hander scattered four hits and allowed three runs over the seven innings. He had five strikeouts, but also suffered some control issues with eight walks.

In the bottom of the seventh, Guiles breezed through the first two hitters with a strike out and a ground out to second base. The next batter walked and then a double put the tying run on second base. Guiles settled down and got a grounder to third to end the game.

Rich Schlamowitz went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Freshman Dillon Landrigan was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The Nittany Lions will head back to Hintz Athletic Field for a doubleheader against Baptist Bible on Thursday, March 10. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
