Nittany Lions battle hard against No. 22 Kutztown University

READING, PA (March 16, 2011) - The Penn State Berks baseball team played strong until the final out in an 8-3 loss at the hands of Kutztown University in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference contest at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (3-8), who took the diamond for the first time in eight days, never backed down against the Division II No. 22 ranked Golden Bears (10-4). The bats got going with a three run seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Rich Schlamowitz and Nick Vitelli both singled to center to start the inning. Schlamowitz came around to score from second base on a passed ball and Vitelli scored on a single to right center by Michael Werner. Geraldo Garcia singled Werner to second base and Aaron Wilkins drove him in with his second hit of the game.

In the ninth, Jason Mays reached on an error to lead off then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fielder's choice groundout by Werner. The Nittany Lions were unable to inch any closer as Mays was left stranded at third to end the game.

Kevin Heilman started and threw the first three innings. He limited the Golden Bears to three runs - two earned - and struck out two. Freshman Zach Guiles threw two scoreless innings and recorded two punch outs. Wilkins forced three groundouts in a quick 1-2-3 eighth inning.

The Golden Bears scored three in the second and a three-run home run in the sixth by Kyle Stoudt built an early cushion. J.R. Seader earned the win with five scoreless innings pitched.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Susquehanna tomorrow for a non-conference contest. First pitch is schedule for 3:30 p.m.
