HAVERFORD, PA (March 30, 2011) – The Penn State Berks baseball team returned to the diamond for the first time in nine days, falling 8-3 in a non-conference game against Haverford College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions (5-11) scored one run in the first, second and fifth innings, but Haverford (16-4) tallied seven runs over the final two innings to take control of the game.
In the opening frame, Jeff Bell singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Nick Vitelli. An inning later, the Lions went ahead 2-1 on an RBI double by Aaron Wilkins that scored Dillon Landrigan, who reached on an error to start the inning. Connor Corson singled home Wilkins in the fifth to round out the Berks scoring.
Jade Hendrick scattered five hits and allowed three runs over the first 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters and left the game with a no decision. Michael Ference suffered the loss after surrendering his first run of the year. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out one batter.
Mike Galetta went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Haverford. Kevin Goff pitched an inning of scoreless relief to earn the win on the mound.
Berks will begin the conference portion of its schedule with a two home doubleheaders this weekend. They will start a twin bill against Keuka on Saturday and then Cazenovia on Sunday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. on both days.
