READING, PA (April 2, 2011) - The Penn State Berks baseball team held on for a 7-4 win in nightcap of its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader to earn a split with Keuka College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks was shutout 6-0 in the opener.
The Nittany Lions (6-12, 1-1 NEAC) donned pink uniforms and teamed up with the softball squad for the first annual "Strikeout Cancer" games. All money raised went toward awareness and cancer research.
Zach Guiles turned in another strong effort on the hill for the Nittany Lions, earning the victory in game two. The freshman right hander went five innings and allowed just three runs to improve to a team leading 3-0 this season. Guiles finished with a career high 10 strikeouts, surpassing his previous best of six against Lebanon Valley.
Kevin Heilman came through clutch at the plate and in the field in the second game. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Heilman gunned down a runner at the plate to end the Storm (1-4, 1-1 NEAC) scoring threat in the third inning. He also started a 4-6-3 double play in the seventh inning to quiet a Keuka rally.
Berks got on the board in the opening frame after Heilman singled to left, stole second base and scored on a Connor Corson hit to left.
An inning later, the Lions broke it open with a six spot that was highlighted by a bases clearing double to left center by Nick Vitelli. Earlier in the inning, Heilman drove home Will Geosits and Dillon Landrigan.
The Storm countered with two in the third and one run in the fifth and seventh innings. Bryer Eshbach
Geosits dropped a perfect bunt in front of pitcher and first baseman to push the lead to 3-0 as Kyle Hartman slid in safely ahead of the throw at home.
Heilman pitched a complete game in the opener, but was the hard luck loser. The junior righty allowed six runs, but only three of which were earned. Heilman matched a career high with six strikeouts.
Jeff Bell, Ryan Zawaski and Vitelli each had singles for the Lions.
Keuka received three RBIs from Keith Prestano, while Ben Przepiora and Jason Kirkum each drove in one run. Kirkum pitched a complete game three hitter with five strikeouts to earn his first win of the year.
The Nittany Lions will host a twin bill with Cazenovia College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
