READING, PA (March 20, 2011) - Zach Guiles fired a complete game one-hitter in the second game and the Penn State Berks baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over visiting Lebanon Valley on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.
In the opener, the Nittany Lions (5-9) battled to a 5-4 win behind the strong pitching efforts of Kevin Heilman and Michael Ference. In the second game, the Lions won 5-0 as Guiles cruised through 5 2/3 innings before a Ryan Schwartz infield single ended the no-hit bid.
The freshman right hander had good command of his fastball and mixed in a darting slider to keep the Dutchmen (7-7) batters off balance. Guiles (2-0) finished with a season-high six strikeouts and did not allow a runner beyond second base. He retired the batters in order in four of the seven innings.
The heart of the Berks order came through with clutch hitting. The Nittany Lions 4-7 spot of the order combined for seven hits, four runs and four RBIs in the second game. Rich Schlamowitz, Nick Vitelli and Michael Werner each went 2-for-3.
In the three-run second inning Berks strung together four straight hits, beginning with a double by Schlamowitz. Vitelli pushed a bunt perfectly between the pitcher and first baseman to turn a sacrifice into a single. Heilman then dropped a bunt single in front of home to score Schlamowitz. Werner singled through the left side to score Vitelli and Aaron Wilkins capped of the scoring with an RBI single.
The Lions tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Vitelli and Werner.
In the first game, Heilman received a no-decision after going the first five innings. The junior right hander worked out of bases loaded jams in the first and third innings. He forced double plays to end scoring threats in the third and fourth inning. Ference, who replaced Heilman in the sixth, went two innings and allowed only one hit to earn his second win of the season.
With the score even at four in the bottom of the sixth, Schlamowitz led off with his second hit of the game. Vitelli sacrificed pinch runner Jerel Elliot up to second followed by back-to-back walks to Kyle HartmanRyan Tantala. With the bases loaded, the Dutchmen pitcher bounced a ball in the dirt and after two stutter steps Elliot broke for home and just reached home safely ahead of the diving catcher for the decisive run.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Connor Corson singled up the middle to score Wilkins for the first run. Corson moved to third on a single by Schlamowitz and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Vitelli then drove in Schlamowitz and eventually scored on a error by the first baseman.
Lebanon Valley chipped away at the lead with three in the top of the fourth and tied with a run in the top of the fifth. With a runner in scoring position, Geraldo Garcia
kept the Dutchmen from taking the lead with a running, over the shoulder grab to end the fifth inning. An inning later, Garcia again flashed the leather with a leaping stop on a chopper. The 4-3 putout kept the runner on second from advancing beyond third base and kept the game tied at 4-all.
The Nittany Lions will return to the diamond tomorrow in a non-conference tilt with Misericordia starting at 3:30 p.m.
