Susquehanna knocks off Lions in ninth

SELINSGROVE, PA (March 17, 2011) - Nick Vitelli's RBI triple highlighted a four-run ninth inning, but the Penn State Berks baseball team was knocked 6-5 by Susquehanna University in Thursday's non-conference contest at Howard Bollinger Field.

The Nittany Lions (3-9) rallied from two runs down in the ninth to go ahead 5-4 and take their first lead since going up 1-0 in the first inning. The Crusaders (4-8) took advantage of a series of Nittany Lion miscues to score two runs and claim the walk off victory. Berks issued two walks, two wild pitches and two errors in the final frame.

In the top of the ninth, Connor Corson singled and came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman a batter later. Vitelli then tripled, scoring Kyle Hartman and pulling Berks within one. Rich Schlamowitz followed with a double to right center to even the contest at four. Jason Mays sacrificed pinch runner J.C. Lacroix to third and a passed ball gave the Nittany Lions their brief lead.

Ken Mack pitched five innings, allowing four runs and striking out a career-high six batters. He earned a no-decision after the Lions late theatrics. Jade Hendrick pitched 3.1 innings of effective relief, but suffered the loss after two unearned runs were credited to him in the ninth. Hendrick had a season-high four strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a quick lead right out of the gate. Aaron Wilkins walked to start the game and scored on a double by Corson. The Crusaders scored a run of their own in the first and tacked on two more in the third on a home run by Erik Tuomisto. Susquehanna put up another run in the fifth.

Vitelli and Corson each finished 2-for-4, while Will Geosits and Dillon Landrigan each added singles.

The Nittany Lions will host Lebanon Valley in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
