READING, PA (February 5, 2011) - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team overcame a slow start to take down North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Cazenovia College, 72-49, on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.
Shakiyla Stone scored a career-high 26 points, on 10-for-22 shooting, to help the Nittany Lions (11-8, 10-6 NEAC) to a season sweep of the Wildcats (5-14, 5-11 NEAC). It was a total team effort as the Berks bench outscored Cazenovia 41-20 and all 10 Nittany Lions scored at least two points.
Steph Binder had 11 points and TAYLOR KREIDER netted 10 to round out Berks scorers in double-figures. DORIAN BISHOP recorded a team-high seven boards and the Lions outrebounded Cazenovia by a 54-52 margin.
The Wildcats were led on offense by Megan McDermott's 10 points. Christy Foster brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Berks struggled out of the gate, failing to make a field goal until a lay-up by Binder at the 14:13 mark. The Wildcats built an early 17-9 advantage and were able to hold that lead through much of the first half. With the Lions trailing 27-19, Kreider converted a three-point play to spur a 16-2 Lion run. During that run, Kreider tallied seven points and Stone added six.
The Lions took total control of the contest in the second half with strong defense. Over the first 10 minutes, 30 seconds out of intermission, the Wildcats managed just six points and trailed 56-35.
Both teams struggled with their shooting. The Lions were 25-for-81 (30.9 percent), while the Wildcats shot at a clip of 18-for-58 (31.0 percent). The blue-and-white made up for the poor shooting by forcing 32 turnovers and cashing in 29 points off of Wildcat errors. Stone registered six steals and Kreider had five.
The Lions continue NEAC play tomorrow against Morrisville State at 1 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
