Strong defense leads Nittany Lions to first win of the season

MAHWAH, NJ (November 19, 2011) - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team held Medgar Evers College to just 15 points in the second half to cruise to its first win of the season by a score of 64-38 on the second day of the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-2) shot 33% from the floor and 43% from 3-point range. Berks again struggled at the free throw line, converting 8-of-15 which was an improvement on its 3-for-14 effort on Friday evening. The Nittany Lions also received a huge lift on the defensive end of the floor with 24 turnovers forced, compared to just 15 committed. The 38 points allowed were the lowest total dating back to January 15, 2011 when Berks defeated Wells College 71-38.

Senior Shakiyla Stone got in a scoring groove with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She knocked down three of the teams six 3-pointers. Stone handed out a game-high five assists and recorded one blocked shot. Kellie Wilson set career-high with 11 points, topping her previous best of 10 in the season opener at Albright College. Wilson's seven rebounds were also a career-best.

Freshman Kaelin Reed added a dominating performance with nine points and a team-leading 16 rebounds. Ashley Kenny chipped in seven points and 12 rebounds, while Kaley Kinek added eight points.

The Nittany Lions went on a 13-0 run coming out of the halftime intermission to up their lead to 44-23 and take total control of the contest. In that stretch, Berks held the Cougars (0-4) to 0-for-11 shooting from the floor and forced five turnovers.

Medgar Evers received all of their scoring from Tiffany Woodbine (15 points), Yvanna Jack (12 points) and Chantal Biscette (11 points). The trio also finished with double-digits in rebounds, with Jack recorded a contest-high 22. Biscette grabbed 14 boards and Woodbine added 12.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener on Tuesday, November 22 at 7 p.m. against Immaculata University.
