Women's soccer heading to NEAC Semifinals

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. (November 1, 2011) - Lyndsay Naughton's early goal and very strong defensive play by the Penn State Berks women's soccer team led to a 1-0 victory over Keuka College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at Jephson Complex. (Boxscore)

The No. 4 seed Storm (8-7-1) may have entered the contest as the higher seed, but Penn State Berks played the better all-around contest. The No. 5 seed Nittany Lions (9-7-1) held a strong advantage in shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (7-3).

Naughton did not waste any time getting the Nittany Lions on the board with an unassisted goal at the 4:56 mark of the first half. From inside the box, Naughton took control of a loose ball and beat the keeper with a shot inside the back left corner. It was her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

The Nittany Lions looked to build on that early lead, but were unable to sneak anything past Keuka keeper Morgan Engelbert. Over the next 20 minutes, Berks would unleash eight shots on goal, but had nothing to show for it. The final shot in that barrage was a line drive off the crossbar b
y Steph Tankalavage.

Engelbert finished the contest with nine saves, while Savannah Cramer was rarely tested. The freshman keeper made the save on the only shot the Storm had on goal. Cramer picked up her seventh shutout of the season and now sports a 1.28 goals against average.

The Keuka offensive attack was made nonexistent by the suffocating defense of Melissa Bennett, Ashley Pardoski, Sam Raimondo and Katie Warner. The strong play by that quartet led to the Nittany Lions spending about 70 percent of the game on their offensive side of the field.

"We played a very great on offense and defense," said head coach Adrian Munteanu. "If we play at this level we could win our game on Saturday to go to the championship."

With the victory, the Nittany Lions avenged last season's 1-0 semifinal loss to Keuka. It was the first time Berks defeated Keuka in postseason play.

The Nittany Lions will now turn their attention to Saturday's contest with No. 1 seed and regular-season champion Lancaster Bible College. The match will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a trip to the NEAC Championship on the line.
