Lions bounce back with shutout win over Morrisville State

READING, PA (October 9, 2011) – Three different players scored goals to help the Penn State Berks women's soccer team earn a 3-0 shutout win on Sunday afternoon over North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Morrisville State. (BOXSCORE)

The Nittany Lions, who suffered a 1-0 setback to Cazenovia College on Saturday, improved to 7-5-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. Berks is currently in third place in the NEAC and padded its lead over fourth place Penn State Harrisburg (4-2 NEAC) in the standings.

Freshman forward Steph Tankalavage came off the bench to provide the spark the Nittany Lions offense needed with the first goal of the match at the 41:08 mark. After making a save, keeper Savannah Cramer punted the ball beyond midfield and the ball took a Berks hop over the head of the last Mustang defender. Tankalavage then took the ball, shook the defense and ripped a shot past the keeper into the left corner for her first goal of the season.

The Nittany Lions built on that lead right out of the gate after halftime. Natalie Woods delivered a perfect cross through traffic to Chelsea Ray, who then deflected the ball through the left side in the 51st minute.

The final goal of the contest came off of the powerful foot of Melissa Bennett. Bennett, who is more known for her defensive prowess, took advantage of a loose ball in Mustang territory. Bennett found the back of the net with a line drive from more than 35-yards out for her first goal of the season.

Cramer continued her dominant play in net for the Nittany Lions. The freshman made six saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. Cramer has surrendered just 16 goals this season and has an astounding 1.31 goals against average. She has received help all season from the solid defensive unit of Bennett, Madi Litwin, Ashley Pardoski, Sam Raimondo and Karly Shaffert.

The Nittany Lions will enjoy a six day break until returning to action on the road Saturday, October 15 against Penn State Abington at 2 p.m.
