Men's soccer cruises to win over Bryn Athyn

READING, PA (October 5, 2011) – Four different players scored as the Penn State Berks men's soccer team shutout Bryn Athyn, 4-0, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions scored in bunches in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. The early cushion, along with the strong all around play by Jonathan Jablonka helped Berks earn its first win of the season.

Jablonka finished the contest with six saves and earned his first shutout of the season. Even more impressive was his deep punt in the second half to set up a goal by Evan Steigerwalt. After making a leaping catch on a corner kick, Jablonka booted the ball well beyond midfield. After two more big bounces, Steigerwalt took a touch and then beat the keeper with his first goal of the season.

Seth Stoner began the scoring frenzy in the first half. The sophomore scored at 15 minutes, 26 seconds into the contest with Eric Moeller providing the assist.

Stephen Todd then showed off his powerful leg with a goal from nearly 40-yards out. Larnelle La Rose passed back to Todd, who then unleashed a kick into the wind that appeared to be heading wide right off the net. As it neared the keeper though, the ball began hooking back and into the right side of the net.

Less than a minute later, Zachary Alesi raced past the last defender and beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation.

Early on in the match it appeared as though Bryn Athyn was going to jump out to a 1-0 lead, but Collin McCormick came out of nowhere to record a defensive stop. Jablonka made diving save and was out of position on the rebound, but McCormick raced in and headed the ball out of harm's way.

The Nittany Lions will look to carry their momentum into this weekend's NEAC contests. They will host Cazenovia College on Saturday and Morrisville State on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
