READING, PA (October 4, 2011) – Sam Raimondo and Chelsea Ray each scored their first goals of the season to help lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Cedar Crest College on Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
The Nittany Lions (6-4-1) have won by shutout in three of their last four matches. The offense has been solid, but it is the stingy defense that has led to the team's success.
The defensive play of Melissa Bennett, Madi Litwin, Ashley Pardoski, Sam Raimondo and Karly Shaffert has quieted the opposing offenses this season. Today's contest was no exception, as the Falcons were held to just two shots. They had one shot on goal, but keeper Savannah Cramer was in position to make the save. It was Cramer's fourth shutout this season and she is now sporting a 1.34 goals against average.
Berks got on the board in the 18th minute off of a corner kick. Katie Warner inserted a perfect from the right corner and Raimondo leaped and kneed the ball past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Alexa Shumate, who had the game winning goal on Saturday, tallied her third score of the season at the 32:21 mark. From just outside the left box, Shumate drove a shot in front of the keeper, bouncing the ball off the inside of the right post and into the net.
The scoring was capped off on a brilliant play by Ray and Emma Babp. Defenders swarmed Babp, who then passed back to a wide open Ray. Ray caught the keeper off guard when she booted a line drive from about 25-yards out and through the left side of the net.
Lyndsay Naughton had a headed in a cross from Natalie Woods, but the score was called off due to an offside call. Naughton later worked a breakaway, but keeper Krysten Gillan made one of 12 saves.
The Nittany Lions will host a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will face Cazenovia (Saturday) and Morrisville State (Sunday).
