Naughton’s career day leads Nittany Lions to win over Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 21, 2011) – Lyndsay Naughton recorded a hat trick and the Penn State Berks women's soccer team picked up a 3-0 shutout over Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions inched closer to earning a berth in the conference playoffs with tonight's victory. Sitting at 7-3-1 in the NEAC, Berks can clinch a spot in the postseason with a Cazenovia loss or by defeating Penn State Harrisburg in next Saturday's regular season finale. Berks could finish as high as third place depending on the outcome of the other teams in playoff contention.

Naughton tallied her first two scores before 10 minutes even ticked off the clock. Karly Shaffert provided the assist on her first goal at 6 minutes, 36 seconds. Just over two minutes later, Naughton scored on a breakaway with Alexa Shumate recorded her team-high fourth assist of the season.

After the Bison defense held her quiet over the next 45 minutes, Naughton found the back of the net in the 58th minute. Melissa Bennett added the assist on Naughton's ninth goal of the season.

The Nittany Lions played just as strong on the defensive end, too. The Bison only managed one shot on goal, which Savannah Cramer was there to stop. It is the sixth shutout of the season for the freshman keeper. The defensive performance by Ashley PardoskiSam Raimondo and Chelsea Ray kept the Bison attack at bay all contest.

Gallaudet keeper Casey McCullough was kept busy in net, finishing with 18 saves. The Nittany Lions outshot Gallaudet by a 29-5 margin.

The Nittany Lions will enjoy an eight day layoff before they host Penn State Harrisburg on October 29 at 3 p.m.
