Nittany Lions fall to crosstown rival Alvernia

READING, PA (October 20, 2011) - Karly Shaffert recorded her first goal of the season as the Penn State Berks women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Alvernia University in a non-conference contest Thursday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (7-7-1) created more scoring opportunities after the halftime intermission, but were only able to found the back of the net once. Shaffert took a pass from Alexa Shumate, made two touches and beat the keeper with a shot into the back right corner. The goal cut the Crusaders (8-6-1) lead to 2-1 in the 73rd minute, but Berks would not get any closer.

Alvernia responded 17 seconds later with a goal by Alyss Reinsell and Karli Nestor tacked on the final score at the 80:11 mark. The Crusaders opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal 13 minutes into the contest. They added the second goal at the 25:12 mark with another unassisted goal.

Savannah Cramer finished with five saves, to run her season-total up to 74.

The Nittany Lions will return to action tomorrow night in a NEAC road contest at Gallaudet. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
