Late goal sinks women's soccer team

READING, PA (September 2, 2010) – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team was narrowly edged out, 2-1, to visiting Albright College on Thursday afternoon's season opener.

With the score deadlocked at one apiece for most of the second half, Albright's Lauren Panichelle found the back of the net with 3:15 remaining in the game. With the play beginning on a corner kick, the Berks defense knocked away the initial kick-in, but the ball squeaked through traffic and found Panichelle's foot.

Trailing 1-0 after the first 45 minutes, the Berks women came out of the halftime intermission determined to get the score even. The Nittany Lions methodically moved the ball down field to force a corner kick.

Ari Fuentes perfectly inserted a pass in front of the net, which TAYLOR KREIDER headed over the keeper for a goal only two minutes, 17 seconds into the half. Kreider put pressure on the Lion defense all match long, finishing the contest with seven shots – five on goal.

Katie Cooper put Albright on the board with crafty foot work. After controlling the ball at midfield, Cooper dribbled in and beat the keeper into the left corner at 40:12 mark of the first half.

Berks keeper CASSIDY DAWSON finished with four saves, while Albright's stopper finished with 10. Berks held a 15-10 advantage in shots, but Albright had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

The women will return to action on Tuesday, September 7 when they travel to DeSales University for a 4 p.m. contest.
